Role Overview :

The Internal Auditor promotes effective and efficient controls by reviewing financial, compliance, operational, fraud, risk, and strategic issues for assigned locations. You will use advanced accounting and auditing standards and techniques to diagnose and determine root causes. You will create summary reports for review by senior management and the State Audit Committee. You may also participate in developing action plans to resolve issues.

Salary : 

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $53,222 per year, but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are:

• Determine objectives, processes, and the lack of processes for assigned audit areas through analysis of the area.
• Conduct meetings, observations, and walkthroughs to document processes.
• Analyze processes to develop process maps.
• Conduct complex, detailed analysis of each process, determining risks and incorporating federal regulations, state statutes, administrative policies, professional standards, best business practices, etc.
• Research data, including scientific studies and systems data, to determine or create key performance indicators to assign impact and probability scores for a ranking to each identified risk.
• Interpret process maps to determine controls for each risk.
• Use analysis and professional judgement to determine if controls are designed sufficiently for the auditor's identified risks, and determine recommendations for efficiencies.
• Create audit test objectives and procedures to create the necessary evidence for an objective audit opinion regarding the functionality of controls, including the nature, timing, and scope.
• Develop test objectives and procedures to be efficient and effective with solutions to anticipated problems.
• Complete and document test objectives and audit procedures by gathering evidence from complex testing, analysis, investigation, observation, etc.
• Draft findings of identified issues.
• Present findings to clients and analyze findings to determine root causes.
• Persuade and advise the client to adopt action plans with sufficient controls and/or to correct controls that are not functioning.
• Analyze client action plans for acceptance and discuss unacceptable actions.
• Develop and issue draft reports.
• Discuss draft report with audit client, Director, and Senior Leadership.
• Issue audit assignment reports.
• Follow Internal Audit Department Standards, including the Institute of Internal Auditors' International Professional Practice Framework (IPPF) for all developed work.
• Respond to reviews of compliance with the Internal Audit Standard and IPPF.
• Meet deadlines by anticipating problems and adapting to situations while continuing to complete multiple audit assignments.
• Continuously enhance knowledge, skill, and other competencies through professional development and research.
• Work effectively, both independently and collaboratively, as part of the Internal Audit team.
• Complete special assignments, audits, or related duties as assigned.

What You'll Need for Success:

Credentials:

• Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or a related field.
• Experience in Accounting, Bookkeeping, or collections work.

Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Additional qualifications:

• Knowledge of compliance laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. 
• Able to perform basic mathematical computations, in identifying and resolving problems, and in the use of a computer and applicable software. 
• Ability to use analytical skills to study data and documents. 
• Excellent attention to detail to thoroughly examine supporting documents. 
• Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 applications.
• Demonstrated ability to develop audit procedures.
• Able to draw sound conclusions from quantitative and qualitative data. 
• Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other agency and division employees, and the public. 
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, and the ability to think creatively. 
• Effective communication skills. 
• Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
