Johns Hopkins University Police Department is seeking highly motivated individuals to serve as Police Lieutenants. We are accepting applications for lateral police candidates who meet the experience qualifications as a certified law enforcement officer in a full-service law enforcement agency (Maryland or Out-of-State). Applicants must be Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC) Certified OR meet Comparative Compliance Standards. Responsibilities Represent the JHPD’s mission, vision and values when interacting with university, community, advocacy groups, and coordinate JHPD resources and activities under supervision to address concerns about university and community issues. Provide law enforcement services, enforce laws, rules, and regulations to ensure safety and protection of individuals, property, and buildings. Manage day-to-day operations of a patrol area, supervise Sergeants and officers, and ensure community policing and proactive crime strategies are implemented. Coordinate investigations, community relations, and safety programs. Ensure compliance with procedural justice, de-escalation, and community policing principles. Perform administrative duties including equipment maintenance, report preparation, and court testimony. Minimum Qualifications Seven (7) years of service as a commissioned law enforcement officer. Two (2) years in the rank of Lieutenant or three (3) years as a Sergeant. Excellent performance record with no serious disciplinary actions. Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field. Additional Requirements U.S. citizenship or permanent legal residency with a pending citizenship application. No felony convictions. Valid driver’s license and current MPTC certification or equivalent. Ability to pass background checks, physical, medical, drug, and psychological assessments. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Effective communication, management, and organizational skills. Knowledge of law enforcement practices, laws, and procedures. Ability to operate law enforcement equipment and work in diverse environments. Strong interpersonal and community engagement skills. Work Environment & Physical Demands Work involves indoor and outdoor activities, exposure to physical hazards, and operating vehicles. The role requires physical strength, agility, and stamina, and may include shift work, holidays, and emergencies. Compensation & Benefits Starting salary: $127,624 . Additional incentives include a 20% city residency increase, annual step increases, and comprehensive benefits. Details at .
