SUMMARY:

Works with the Director of Engagement to support the development and implementation of strategic communications plans to publicize The Carter Center. Primary duties include generating positive media coverage about The Carter Center, its programs, and its spokespeople. Reports to the Director of Engagement as the primary supervisor and may receive direction or functional assignments from the Vice President of Communications. Due to travel requirement, Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) will be required.

FORMAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

Develops and implements media relations and/or publications programs and oversees media relations and/or publications for specific colleges and schools. Assists in strategic public relations planning and implementation including, media relations, publications and periodicals, crises communication and issues management. Develops relationships with journalists and oversees and implements new methods for media relations efforts.Edits texts and works with clients and designers to produce publications. May supervise staff and production of news and public information materials.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in public relations, journalism or related field, and five years experience in writing, editing or public relations, OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Eight or more years of experience in journalism or institutional communications Established professional relationships with major national media Exhibits high-level proficiency in writing and editing for print and broadcast platforms A record of success making proactive national media placements Knowledge of international affairs and global health Strong verbal and written communications skills, and good news judgment. Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment Self-motivated and results-oriented Domestic and international travel required NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to The Carter Center on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs. Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines. All non-exempt employees must reside within the state of Georgia.
